How Apex Legends works

Apex is a battle royale: squads (usually trios) drop onto a map, loot gear, and fight to be the last team standing as the ring closes in. Before each match you pick a Legend with unique abilities.

Legends & abilities

Every Legend has a Passive, a Tactical (lower-cooldown ability), and an Ultimate (their strongest ability). Legends belong to Assault, Controller, Recon, Skirmisher, or Support. Class perks apply in current Core modes such as Ranked and Unranked; Freestyle modes can use different rules.

Choose the right place to learn

EA divides the current playlists into Core (Ranked and Unranked) and more relaxed Freestyle modes such as Wildcard, Mixtape, and Bot Royale Evolved. New players can use Training and the Firing Range before taking the Core rule set into Unranked.

The basics that keep you alive

Survival basics
  • Loot shields and a balanced weapon pair

  • Use the ping system to communicate

You can play well without a mic.

  • Stick with your squad

    Solo fights invite third parties.

  • Watch the ring and rotate early

  • Revive teammates and use respawn beacons

Your first games (recommendations)

First-games checklist
  • Play with a full squad

  • Pick a Legend you enjoy and learn them

  • Land somewhere quieter to learn the game

  • Practice pinging loot and enemies

  • Fight only when you have the advantage

Frequently asked questions

How many players are in a squad?
Usually three (trios); duos and other modes also appear in rotation.
What is a Legend?
A playable character with a unique Passive, Tactical, and Ultimate ability, grouped into classes like Assault, Skirmisher, Support, Controller, and Recon.
How do abilities work?
Your Tactical is on a cooldown and your Ultimate charges over time; the Passive is always active.
Do you need kills to win?
No — positioning and rotations win more games than early fights. You win by being the last squad standing.
