How League of Legends works

League is a 5v5 game on a map called Summoner's Rift. Each team defends a base, and you win by pushing through the three lanes, taking towers, and destroying the enemy Nexus. Everyone starts weak and grows stronger by earning gold and XP during the match.

The five roles

The five roles

  • Top

    A solo lane up top, usually bruisers and tanks.

  • Jungle

    Roams the jungle for monster buffs and ganks lanes.

  • Mid

    A solo lane in the middle — high-impact mages and assassins.

  • Bot (ADC)

    A ranged carry that scales hard with items.

  • Support

    Protects the ADC, wards, and sets up plays.

Where power comes from

  • Last-hit minions for gold — the killing blow is what pays.
  • Take objectives: Dragons, Rift Herald, and Baron Nashor give team-wide buffs.
  • Spend gold on items when you recall to base.
  • Avoid needless deaths — each one hands the enemy gold and map pressure.
